One of the stops (the stop for the character "Brook") is Sakura Hotel so lots of people come to the hotel to get a stamp.

Everyday there is a helper for the stampers and today I would like to introduce her to you!

Have you ever heard about Rakugo 落語?
It's like a Japanese traditional "sit" com. Listening to Rakugo in English would be a very exciting & precious opportunity! Don't miss it!

oshimasennsei[1].jpg
Sakura Cafe Hatagaya is celebrating its first anniversary!
To commemorate this special occasion, we are honoured to have Bunkyo Gakuin University Assistant Professor Dr. Kimie Oshima, to perform "Rakugo in English" for us.
Rakugo, or Traditional Japanese Comedy Story Telling,
is a popular verbal entertainment since the 19th century. Now Dr. Oshima has taken the art to the next level by combining it with English, sparking a chain of non-stop laughter!

After the performance, there will be a reception party
where drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Noh Workshop!

Yesterday we held the Noh Workshop here at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho.  Have you ever seen Noh?

Our teacher was Ms. Shuko Tsuchiya who is a professional Noh Performer, it is quite rare for women to be No performers so we were really lucky that she could come and talk to us again.

We started off by watching a video of Noh, just to give everyone an idea of what it is like.  I think most people were surprised that there is not much movement and you can not even see the performer's face because it is covered by a mask.

Next, Ms. Tsuchiya talked to us about the history of Noh and how it overcame 2 big periods of change, the Meiji Restoration (around 1860/1870) and World War II.  But Noh survives today and in 2001 was recognised by UNESCO as a "Cultural Heritage."

We were lucky yesterday to actually see a real Noh "mask" and 2 of our lucky customers got to try it on, doesn't it suit them!  The field of vision is really small through the eyes and to see down you actually have to look down the nose!

noh june4 002.jpg     noh june4 007.jpg

noh june4 010.jpg

We also got to look at some "fans" or ougi as they are known in Japanese.  We looked at 3 different fans and the colours in relation to the role in Noh.

noh june4 021.jpg

Finally we all tried to sing in the Noh style, we all said "Medetakere" which signals the end of every Noh song.  Everyone did really well!

noh june4 014.jpg

A big thank you to Ms. Tsuchiya and all of our guests who came to the workshop!

To find out more about the Noh Theatre close to our hotel please click here it is all in Japanese so when you come and stay please ask any member of staff for help!

Did you know that today is the start of the Sumo here in Tokyo?

sumo.jpg

Yesterday at around 6pm some people came to read the Sumo order of fights for the first day of the tournament.

world beer 034.jpg
This is the flag!

The guys walk around the Jimbocho area and play a traditional Japanese drum and 3 specialist guys read the names in a special way, to me it sounds similar to a Kabuki style of singing (although it might just be me!)

order.jpg
This is what they read....I can only read the names of the wrestlers I like!

ふれ太鼓 010.jpg
This is the taiko drum they play

This is when they arrived at the hotel, everyone came out to watch!

Stay tuned tomorrow for our guide to the sumo tournament!

The Festival!

Sorry about the delay but here are some photos from the festival on Tuesday.  The festival is from Misaki Jinja just up the road in Suidobashi and lots of our guests and tenants of Sakura House joined in and carried the portable shrine.

There were so many willing people that the whole shrine was completely carried by our guests around the block until they reached the front of the hotel where champagne and food was waiting for them.

Everyone gathered around the back of the hotel
guests4.jpg
Everyone stood in front of a Taiko (a Japanese drum)

guests 2.jpg
Luckily Mr. Takagi helped to explain to everyone what they should do!

guests3.jpg
It's heavier than it looks...

carrying2.jpg
That's the festival spirit!

It was really hot on Tuesday, over 25 degrees but everyone returned to the hotel with smiles on their face so it was a real success.

guests.jpg
Everyone wore Happi coats and tabi (Japanese shoes)

Otsukere sama deshita!

Nice work everybody, please come back in 2 years time and help us carry the portable shrine again!
